Volunteering to Help Diaper Need

When we think of basic needs, diapers may not be the first item that comes to mind. However, with the average expense for a month of diapers running nearly $100, some families make the difficult decision each month of choosing between basic needs like food and utilities and being able to buy enough diapers.

A study commissioned by Kimberly-Clark, the maker of Huggies® diapers, revealed that diaper need is a critical issue with one in three families struggling to provide enough diapers to keep their baby or toddler clean, dry and healthy. Adding to this challenge is government supported programs, such as food stamps, only provide for food and nutrition and do not allow the purchase of diapers. This reinforces a local United Way study noting diaper need as a real concern for many families in the Fox Cities. This resulted in the launch of the Fox Cities Diaper Bank in 2011.

With a mission of raising community awareness of diaper need and to assist low-income families meet their diaper needs, the diaper bank collects, stores and helps distribute diapers to families across the Fox Cities. The Fox Cities Diaper Bank distributes 300,000 to 400,000 diapers annually. Diapers are obtained through financial and product donations and Valley Packaging Industries (VPI) provides the necessary storage space.

VPI also donates space for volunteers, like Network Health’s marketing department, to help repackage diapers. Nine employees sorted through a mixture of sizes, bags and boxes to help repack nearly two full pallets of diapers for local families. All diapers are repacked to ensure fairness in the number of diapers given to families and to help manage inventory. Since 2012, over 3,000 people from the Fox Cities have volunteered to repack diapers for families and Network Health Marketing Director Melanie Draheim said the team was happy to help.

“Our mission is to enhance the life, health and wellness of the people we serve, and helping families in need is an important part of that,” said Draheim. “Contributing our time for causes like the Fox Cities Diaper Bank creates a meaningful impact directly to struggling low income families in our area who need extra support.”
